WHY WE DO IT
Many people don't realize that Watauga County is the third poorest county in North Carolina. Our county is characterized by a large population of individuals who struggle to provide for their most basic of needs including access to healthy, nutritious food.
Many low-income Watauga residents have limited food options. Access to fresh food is often difficult, expensive and limited. As a result, individuals often resort to prepared, cheaper, and unhealthy foods that are more readily available. Often it is these cheap foods that lead to medical issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.
The goal of GrowWatauga.org is to provide fresh, nutritious food options to our neighbors in need. We strive to limit suffering due to food insecurity, malnutrition, or diet-linked diseases.
